Joaquín Avila is a Co-founder of EMX Capital. He co-led EMX’s investments in ILSP Global and in AG Convertidora, and serves as Board Member of both companies. He also is a Board Member of Bisonte, Farmapiel, KDM and Consorcio Valsa.
He was Managing Director and Fund Head for Carlyle Mexico Partners of The Carlyle Group participating on the Board of Hispanic Teleservices Corporation, Universidad Latinoamericana, Arabela and IHS Global.
Prior to joining Carlyle, Joaquín was Managing Director and Head of Latin America for Lehman Brothers, He formed VA Investments, a private equity firm in Mexico. Before that we worked for Banco Santander, first as Head of Corporate Finance-Latin America and then as Managing Director and Member of the Board of Santander Investment. He also worked at Bankers Trust, Libra Bank PLC and in the Mexican Ministry of Energy and Mines.
Joaquin earned his B.S. in engineering from the Universidad IberoAmericana, his M.S. in engineering from Stanford University, and his M.B.A. from Yale University.
Rodrigo Fonseca is Co-founder of EMX Capital. He led the acquisition of Farmapiel, where he is a member of the Board and oversees the operation of the company. Rodrigo co-led the investment in Bisonte and serves on the Board. He serves on the Board of ILSP Global and KDM.
As part of The Carlyle Group Mexico team he was actively involved in the investments in Universidad Latinoamericana, and Arabela.
Prior to joining Carlyle, Rodrigo worked at Merrill Lynch & Co. Previously, Rodrigo was Vice President of GE Capital in New York. Before that, he served as a consultant at McKinsey & Co.
Rodrigo received his MBA from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania, and his undergraduate degree in Industrial Engineering from Universidad Anahuac.
Andres Obregon is a co-founder of EMX Capital. Andres co-led the evaluation and structuring of ILSP Global, AG Convertidora and Bisonte. He serves as Board Member in the three of them. He also serves as Board Member of Consorcio Valsa.
As part of The Carlyle Group Mexico team he was actively involved in the investments in Universidad Latinoamericana, Maxiprenda and IHS Global.
Prior to joining Carlyle, Andres was a technology entrepreneur and worked for Wal-Mart de Mexico.
Mr. Obregon received his M.B.A. from the Stanford Graduate School of Business and his B.S. in industrial engineering from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico.
Miguel Valenzuela is a Co-founder of EMX Capital. He led the investment in KDM Fire Systems and serves on the Board.
Recently Miguel directed the investment in Consorcio Valsa, in which he serves on the Board. He also serves on the Board of AG Convertidora.
As part of The Carlyle Group Mexico team he was actively involved in the investments in Lowes Cinema (Cinemex), Hispanic Teleservices Corporation and Maxiprenda.
Prior to joining Carlyle, Miguel worked for Compass Group in Mexico. Prior to that, Miguel directed VA Investments. Before that, he was the Co-Manager of the Emerging Mexico Fund for Santander Investment
Miguel Valenzuela received his M.B.A. from the University of Michigan Graduate School of Business and his B.A. in business Administration from ITAM in Mexico City.
Prior to joining EMX Capital, Jaime was part of the Investment Banking team in SAI Consultores. He began his professional experience in Axan, a financial consulting firm.
Jaime passed Level I of the CFA Program.
Jaime holds a B.A. in Finance from ITAM in Mexico City.
Prior to joining EMX Capital, Santiago was an Investment Analyst at GBM Ventures. He began his professional career as an Equity Research Analyst at GBM.
Santiago received his B.S. in Industrial Engineering from Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico
Administrative Team / María José Candás
Currently Ms. Candás serves as EMX’s Administrative Manager. Prior to this, she was an Administrative Manager for The Carlyle Group, where she was part of the group since it started operations in Mexico in 2004. She has ample experience in managing administrative private equity investment structures given that Ms. Candás was in charge of administrating the two funds that The Carlyle Group held in Mexico, Carlyle Mexico Partners and Carlyle Latin America Real Estate Partners.
Prior to joining Carlyle in 2004, Ms. Candás was in charge of the administrative office at Russell Reynolds Associates.
She also worked during 4 years in the Hotel segment, specializing in the operation and administration of different hotels as Administrative Manager of timeshares, Groups and Conventions and Client Service Manager among others.
María José Candás holds a B.S. in Accounting (Honors) form Universidad Iberoamericana, as well as various finance degrees.
